PLAYDAY 4/10/04

By J&J Motorsports News

Playday 2004 at Skagit Speedway was a striking success.  A good crowd showed up to enjoy the great weather and watch the action on the track.  Forty-four cars took advantage of playday to get the feel of new cars and a much improved racing surface.

During this past winter, Dr. Dirt made the trip to Alger to test Skagit Speedway’s clay. Organics were combined with the clay to create a more cohesive racing surface. Throughout the off season, the mixture was continually ground and graded into the track. The intense work paid off with a well graded, durable track that held the moisture fairly well during the 80 degree heat of this past Saturday afternoon.  With racing in the cool of the evening instead of the heat of day, it looks like it will be the best track yet.

The action on the track was impressive. Because there were few transponders in use on Saturday, it was hard to get actual lap speeds but they were fast. Just like last season, the racers were ready for their heats and starting to push out as the previous sprinters moved back into the pits. There were no serious accidents as in the past although there were a few spinouts. Between heats the track was watered and packed.

Not all profiles were turned in on Saturday, so we do not have all the names available. However, many familiar faces returned.  Jesse Whitney, last year’s 410 “Rookie of the Year” has returned along with the 360 “Rookie of the Year” Brian Ash. Dan Pierson, new daddy Andy Jacobson, Greg Kentch, George Graham and Henry Van Dam were here in their 360s; as well as Canadians Travis Rutz and Cory Chamberlain. Chad Hillier is driving for the Husons this season. New in Sportsman Sprinters are Richard Thornton of Edmonds and Chris Pattenaude from Ferndale . Kelly Barnett, Brad Sweeney, Kelleigh Johnson, Brad Sweeney, Otto Jorgenson and Boyd Starr are back along with Justin Knowles who took last year off. As we collect the profiles throughout the beginning of the season, all of our hard working, competitive teams will get a mention.

The view of the track and the infield was extraordinary, not only the site of the new racing surface but the numerous new signs along the backstretch and the front stretch as well. The number of sponsors that have signed on with Skagit Speedway this year is impressive. To name a few, we have Bud Racing, and Bud Light, Coca Cola, Haggen Food and Pharmacy, Bob’s Burgers & Brew and Franz Breads along with El Gitano and Papa Johns. Les Schwab Tire and Blade Chevrolet, Northwest Propane, Coach Corral is on board; as well as, Snap-on, Cook Road Shell, Foley’s Eazytime RV with Monaco Coach and K&M Resorts, and The Skagit and Advanced Power Coating. Other sponsors will get their well deserved mention as the season progresses. When the new programs arrive, you will find that many sponsors have included value coupons in the programs. There will also be some terrific give-aways during the racing.

Steve Beitler, Funtime Promotions and all the staff and volunteers welcome everyone to the 2004 Skagit Speedway racing season. Join us every Saturday night for the regular shows and the coming special events. New events this season are the USAC/CRA Non-Wing Series race at the end of July and the AMA-PRO-AM Flat Track Motorcycles presented by Cycle Barn at the end of August.

See you there for the season opener this coming Friday and Saturday, 4/16 and 4/17, at Skagit Speedway where families have enjoyed “50 Years of Family Fun”!

(Alger, Wa) Fifty-nine sprinters made the trip to the high-banked clay oval in Alger tonight to give Skagit Speedway fans a great night of racing action sponsored by Blade Chevrolet. Travis Jacobson had a good start to his evening when he won both his 360 and 410 heat races. After getting off to a slow start, the 360 A-Main finished with Alan Munn thundering past Greg Sandquist in the white flag lap to take the checkered. Brian Ash led Kevin Smith across the finish in the Sportsman A-Main. In a hard charging A-Main event, Mike Melwicks was victorious as he crossed the finish followed by Jim Carter and Eddie Evans.
